Macaron versus Macaroon

So, just exactly what IS the difference between a MACARON and a MACAROON?

Spelling wise, they are differentiated by the number of “Os.” And although macarons and macaroons share very similar names, the difference is extreme when it comes to taste and cooking technique.

 

A macaron is a sandwich-like cookie that looks similar to a soft, fluffy Oreo. It is filled with a variety of things, including: homemade curds, jams, ganache, buttercream, and the like.

 

A macaroon is made using shredded coconut. They often look like they have been “dropped” onto the baking sheet. But sometimes they a crafted into all kinds of shapes.
